Rereading a book I hated at 20
Picked it up again a decade later and it hit completely differently. Either the book changed or I did — probably me. A few passages I underlined this time that I walked straight past before.

Life is short and the pile is tall. I used to force myself to finish everything out of some misplaced guilt. Now I give a book fifty pages, and if it isn't earning its keep, it goes back on the shelf. No regrets.
When I can't commit to a novel, collections save me. One sitting, one complete thing. A handful I keep returning to when attention is thin.
I write in my books. Pencil, always, but I write. Years later the notes are half the pleasure of a reread — a conversation with a younger, more certain version of myself.
